DSU hiker completes Appalachian hike

Merritt Bergin.

A Delta State University student has accomplished something only about 750 people succeed to in a given year.

Merritt Burgin has successfully thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail. Burgin, an outdoor recreation administration student, is among the 25 percent of hikers who complete the 2,190-mile trail each year. About 3,000 people try annually.

Burgin celebrated the moment by posing for the sign at the top of Mount Katadhin at Baxter Peak, the highest point in Maine.
