A Mississippi inmate was recaptured Tuesday in Ohio, after leading authorities on a five-day, 900-mile manhunt.
The Humphreys County Sheriff’s Department reported that Garnett Hughes, 33, was captured Tuesday morning.
The Mississippi Department of Corrections said Hughes was serving two life sentences for kidnapping and sexual assault. He had been held at the East Mississippi Correctional Facility, a private prison operated by a company based in Utah.
On Friday, Hughes was escorted to Belzoni, where he was to attend his mother’s funeral. MDOC said that Hughes escaped his guards in route to the funeral.
Ohio woman, 51-year-old Yvette Mendoza, identified as Hughes’ girlfriend was also arrested for aiding in Hughes’ escape.
U.S. marshals in Ohio captured Hughes. They said he was still wearing one of his handcuffs.
