"PJ, he was a perfect fit for what we needed," Delta State head basketball coach Jim Boone thinks back to recruiting some years ago.
In 2014, one backyard athlete signed his national letter of intent with Delta State.
"I saw how much they believed in me. I needed to give them something to believe in," PJ recalls.
Four years and 112 consecutive games later, PJ Davis has done that and more.
"He's been the epitome of consistency for his entire career."
And Davis has the numbers to prove it.
Etching his way into the Delta State record books in rebounds, field goals made, scoring, and blocked shots.
Not to mention, Davis is set to grace the top three in games played for the Green-and-white.
"Every day I set out to do better than the next person."
Including one person with whom he shares more with than just a last name.
Paul Davis, Sr., or dad as PJ knows him spent time on the Cleveland court as well.
"My dad playing here did kinda play a part. I kinda wanted to share in his things"
A Delt State Hall of Famer on the hardwood, Paul Davis has made his mark in the books as well. He's second in Delta Stae history in steals and fourth in the Gulf South Conference in blocked shots.
"I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to break my dad's record."
He's already done that in scoring with 7 guaranteed games to play...
"At the end of the day, I just wanna be the best i can be in all aspects. If I stomp on some of his records in the process, that'll be a plus."
"He's really good at understanding the game, angles, how to anticipate the next pass and you couple that with his incredible athleticism," Boone tells us thinking back on Davis' four year career.
But it's not just on the court with the senior forward shines....
"I i had to be a follower first before i could be a leader."
A leader by example.
"I can tell you that PJ Davis--every single day-- is here with his hard hat on and his lunch pail and gives you every single thing he has."
Which is only fitting.
What's the one thing he'll take away from his time here?
"Just toughness. A lot of people when they hear the word toughness, they just think about brute strength but being at Delta State has made me realize how tough you have to be mentally as well as physically just to go through life."
